The Astrology of Luck: Key Indicators for Attracting Abundance and Blessings

March 7, 2025

With St. Patrick’s Day approaching, “The Luck of the Irish,” four-leaf clovers, and rainbows may be on your mind, as symbols of good fortune. Spring is also approaching in the northern hemisphere, bringing the promise of renewal, fresh starts, and overall optimism. Luck is something that most people hope and wish for, but in astrology there are indicators in the birth chart, or during particular astrological transits that can dictate how and when you experience luck and blessings. So let’s take a look at luck indicators in astrology.

Jupiter, The Greater Benefic

If you’re familiar with astrology, it’s likely you’ve heard that Jupiter is the “greater benefic”, as compared to Venus, the “lesser benefic.” The benefic planets in astrology are exactly how they sound – they bring the good stuff. In Roman mythology, Jupiter was the “HGIC” – head god in charge, and his name translates to “The heavenly father.” While the sun is the center of our solar system, Jupiter, as the largest planet, is believed to bring abundance, luck, wisdom, expansion, growth, and opportunity. Jupiter is the planetary ruler of Sagittarius and Pisces (in traditional astrology), so if you have personal planets (sun, moon, Venus, Mars), or an angle (Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, Imum Coeli) in Sagittarius or Pisces, you may have an extra dose of luck on your side, as it relates to the function of these planets or angles. Sun in Sagittarius or Pisces people may attract the most luck when they express themselves or have a strong sense of identity. If the sun is in a good aspect to another planet, and/or in a house where it can express itself well (5th & 9th), then luck, key wisdom, or acclaim may come through the father, or the more energetically audacious parent.

However, this is not cut and dried. The aspects made to these planets and points, and where Jupiter is placed in your natal chart also influence how this luck manifests in your life. Because Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, when it’s in either of these signs in a person’s birth chart, it’s “dignified” or right at home. This means it can access and reap the benefits of Jupiter more easily. In Cancer, Jupiter is “exalted,” so when it’s in this sign, it can also bestow Jupiter’s blessings more easily, but it also may be overly “Jupiter-like” – excessive, exaggerating, and overly optimistic. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing when it comes to Jupiter, so while it can bring blessings, it can also bring an abundance of things that are not so good for you. So if you have a strong Jupiter placement in your chart, leaning into the more positive traits of the planet – growth, knowledge, healthy optimism, versus excess and gluttony, will help you reap the benefits of this happy planet.

Jupiter takes approximately one year to transit through a zodiac sign, and the house it transits for the year in relation to your natal chart, is where you may experience luck, gains, and abundance for that year period. So if Jupiter is transiting your 7th house of relationships, you may attract a person or people who bring(s) blessings to your life or help(s) you grow and expand, or you may experience gains through your current partner (romantic or business), or clients.

Venus, The Lesser Benefic

Venus as “the lesser benefic” is not as directly connected to luck in astrology like Jupiter is, but it is connected to things that we value, and what brings us pleasure. It also dictates the nature of our finances and relationships, so therefore it can have a big influence on what and who we are able to attract, that we consider “good” and gratifying. Venus was the Roman god of love and beauty, daughter of Jupiter and Dione, and mother of Cupid. Venus is dignified, or “at home” in Taurus and Libra, and exalted in Pisces. Venus finds joy in the 5th house of romance, creativity, and children. If you have Venus in Taurus or Libra, you are able to better express and attract the positive traits of Venus – kindness, creativity, and earthly pleasures. Venus in Pisces can also attract these things, but at times is a tad too idealistic, and may be prone to deception in relationships, especially if Venus is poorly aspected, or in a challenging house. Venus in the 5th or 11th house, may attract people who help bring pleasure or harmony in their lives. But just like with Jupiter, strong Venus placements may push the limits of the Venus energy, leaning too much into the physical, pleasurable side of life. We all need to practice some level of self-restraint. But if you stay balanced and enjoy Venus, while practicing self-control, it can be used to bring good fortune and a feeling of contentment to your life.

The Grand Trine

A grand trine is an aspect in the birth chart that shows a harmonious relationship between three or more planets. Simply put, aspects in astrology are dictated by where planets are in physical relationship to each other. In an astrology chart, a grand trine looks like a triangle, and the planet(s) that sit(s) at each angle has/have a 120 degree relationship to the other planets in the triangle. This is a trine aspect. A trine is a beneficial aspect that has the energy of Jupiter. When planets are in a trine relationship, they get along and work together, generally bringing good experiences to the native. But this aspect can be taken for granted, since it ends up being a big influence on the native’s life, and something they become conditioned to expect.

Having a grand trine in the chart where three or more planets are working together to bring blessings, is like having a lucky charm with you in scenarios related to the house the planets are in. For example, if a person has a grand trine between Uranus in the 2nd house, Venus in the 6th house, and the sun in the 10th house, they may attract unexpected financial/career/professional opportunities that help them advance and shine in their public life. This can be an ongoing theme for the native, and because they experience this support frequently throughout their life, they may develop a strong faith in things working out in their favor, financially and professionally. This can be interpreted as manifesting, but having this placement is the driver of the ability of the native to keep a positive mindset, allowing them to manifest what they want professionally.

The Part of Fortune

The Part of Fortune in the natal chart is an Arabic Lot/point in the chart that is calculated by using the degrees of the ascendant, sun, and moon. The sign and house placement of the part of fortune indicate where the native considers themselves fortunate, or where they consistently experience joy.  Embracing the qualities of the zodiac sign that the part of fortune is in, and prioritizing affairs related to the house it is in, can bring more luck and a feeling of prosperity. For example, if you have the part of fortune in Gemini in the 3rd or 9th house, communication, learning, travel, and connecting with others may bring you joy. Since both the 3rd and 9th houses are connected to learning, and media, you could find success through writing, teaching, media, and publishing.

Luck Through the 5th, 9th and 11th houses

The 5th, 9th and 11th houses are the most auspicious houses in astrology as it relates to attracting luck and things we enjoy. If you have personal planets in one of these houses, particularly the sun, Venus or Jupiter, you can be slightly luckier than most. And when planets transit the 5th, 9th or 11th houses, you may experience support or good fortune in these areas of your life.

The 5th house is connected to romance, creativity, and children, so is therefore associated with play. Sports and gambling fall under the 5th house, so people with strong 5th house placements may have the midas touch when it comes to winning of all forms.

The 9th house is associated with Jupiter, and therefore is the house of higher-learning, spirituality, and travel. While this house isn’t directly connected to material or physical wealth, it is connected to overall optimism and what brings a jovial feeling. If you have planets in the 9th house, you can attract luck through foreign people or pursuits, higher education, the legal system, or your spiritual practice.

The 11th house is the house of gains, hopes, and wishes. Since it’s the second house from the 10th, it’s also connected to money we make through our career and reputation. The 11th house rules groups, organizations, technology, community, and friends. If you have personal planets in this house, people are likely an important currency for you. You have the ability to achieve your hopes and wishes when you are collaborative, friendly, and open-minded.

There are more indicators of luck in astrology, but starting with these basics can help you tap into your natural ability to manifest more of what you want, and better take advantage of, and appreciate opportunities that come your way.
